DoseMed vs Apple Health Medications

Apple Health's Medications feature is free, built into every iPhone, works on Apple Watch and supports cyclical and every-few-days schedules. DoseMed adds what Health lacks: pill counts with refill alerts, a 9,900+ FDA drug label database, Home Screen widgets and an AI assistant, without an account. Use Health for complex schedules and Apple Watch; use DoseMed if you want to know when to refill.

Choose Apple Health if…

  • You want an Apple Watch app or Siri logging.
  • Your medication follows a cyclical or every-few-days schedule, such as a 21/7 pill pack.
  • You want a family member to see your medication list through Health sharing.
  • You want automatic follow-up reminders when a dose isn't logged.

Choose DoseMed if…

  • You want to know how many pills are left and get warned before you run out.
  • You want the full FDA label for each medicine, wherever you live.
  • You want to ask questions about your own medication list in plain language.
  • You want widgets that let you mark a dose as taken from the Home Screen.
  • You track a pet's medication too.

The short version

Apple's Medications feature, added to the Health app in iOS 16, is the natural starting point for any iPhone user. It is free, already installed, syncs with Apple Watch, and handles unusual schedules such as cyclical packs or a dose every few days. In the U.S. it can also check interactions between your medications.

DoseMed is for people who want more around the reminder:

  • Supply tracking. Enter how many pills are in the box. DoseMed subtracts each dose you mark as taken and shows a low-stock alert while there is still time to refill. The Health app has no pill count.
  • Drug information everywhere. DoseMed includes 9,900+ FDA labels from DailyMed (indications, dosage, warnings, adverse reactions, interactions), and the database is bundled with the app. Health's medication details and interaction checks are U.S. only.
  • Questions in plain language. The AI assistant knows the medications on your list, so you can ask about combinations or a missed dose. It is a research aid, not a clinician.
  • Widgets. See your next dose on the Home Screen and mark it taken without opening the app.

Where Apple Health is better

We would rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one. Health is the better choice if you rely on Apple Watch, if your schedule is cyclical or every few days (DoseMed repeats on chosen weekdays only), or if you want a family member to see your list through Health sharing. Health also sends an automatic follow-up when a dose is not logged within 30 minutes; DoseMed relies on Snooze.

Privacy

Both keep your medication list on your devices rather than on a company server. Health data is part of your Apple Account; DoseMed needs no account at all and only syncs through iCloud if you turn that on. See privacy-first design for exactly what DoseMed sends and when.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a medication reminder app if my iPhone has the Health app?

Not always. Health's Medications feature covers reminders and logging well, for free. A separate app makes sense when you need something Health doesn't do, such as pill counts with refill alerts, full FDA label information outside the U.S., widgets or an AI assistant.

Can I use DoseMed and Apple Health together?

Yes, but you would get two reminders for each dose. Most people pick one app for reminders. DoseMed does not read from or write to the Health app.

Does Apple Health remind you to refill prescriptions?

Apple's guide does not describe pill counts or refill reminders in the Medications feature. DoseMed counts down your supply with each dose and alerts you before you run out.
